originally the name of a slate rock, which rises just before St.Goarshausen from the Rhine, the poet Clemens Brentano created in 1801 fantasy figure "Lore Lay", one on the rock-seated water woman the lures sailors to their death with song and the meaning of the name is not entirely clear, perhaps "ambush" + "rock"
